Instituto Wark

We are a private non-profit association focused on the cultural area specially linked to the art scene in the Community of Rocinha. The projects have being carried out for more than 12 years and developed by the artist Wark Rocinha who, before starting to make art full time, working not only in the community of Rocinha, but also throughout thewhole of Rio de Janeiro , reaching other locations over the years, in and outside of Brazil.

Our History

The Wark Institute was born in 07-07-2011 from a common ideal: a collective formed by artists, cultural articulators and professionals from different areas, which has a beneficent and non-governmental character, with the purpose of focusing on cultural development and aiming at the philanthropic awareness of human beings, prioritizing children and the local youth, both national and international.

Today, the institute develops projects with the purpose of adapting, renovating and redesigning public spaces using Graffiti and other visual arts techniques, together with its students. It holds exhibitions, offers courses, lectures, seminars, encourages research and publications that aids needy communities like the Favela da Rocinha, thus becoming a great supporter and partner of social engagement in the area of culture, art, health, education and sport. Our main activities are linked to graffiti and drawing workshops, developed free of charge in the community. We are the only reference for this type of urban art in the community, which works as an art school where everyone can have access to art and raise awareness of its value as well as that of artworks, study and knowledge.

Impact

During this journey, we have worked on several aspects, carrying out multiple projects and offering several courses free of charge. The courses, consisting of 30 up to 50 students with an average length of six months, we have reached around a total of more than 3000 students. These lessons and projects have been carried out in public and private spaces, as well as in private and public schools.

Regarding the financial support, the Institute constantly seeks institutional sponsorship, both public and private, as well as material support and voluntary donations, as it is a non-profit civil association. Only in this way is it possible to guarantee the realization of the projects, not only in the community of Rocinha, but also aiming at the exchange of experiences with other communities, both national and international.

Future

Aspiring for a better future full of great opportunities, we finally obtained our own space for the construction of our headquarters and the "Arte Urbana Museu" (AUM ). This museum will house what we call the "Galeria Escola” in the Rocinha community. The purpose of this is to provide opportunities, such as artistic assistance and teaching and to exhibit and catalog works of art, making them available for the acquisition of interested parties, thus contributing to the maintenance of the museum. In addition, we intend to offer qualifications through education to assist young artists from social marginality, giving new opportunities to those who are discriminated against by society.

Currently, our actions are possible through funds from the sale of works of art and commissioned works by the artist Wark.
